Women may be judged for their choices without anyone asking how many choices they actually had in the first place. Today, women navigate overlapping roles and responsibilities. They study and work, contribute to supporting their families and raising their children, and strive to build their futures. At the same time, they remain surrounded by social expectations and pressures that may require them to fulfill all these roles without always having access to sufficient knowledge, resources, or support.
The Women and Girls Empowerment Program works to support girls and women in accessing their social, economic, and cultural rights; expanding their opportunities for education, learning, and employment; and developing their skills and capabilities. It also promotes their independence, their ability to make decisions, and their participation in their communities. In addition, the program works to protect them from violence, discrimination, and harmful practices, while facilitating their access to psychological support, legal counseling, and the services they need.
Caritas works with communities and their institutions to ensure that protecting girls’ and women’s rights and supporting them do not remain individual responsibilities, but become part of the practices and services available to them. It supports local associations and partners in strengthening their capacity to address issues affecting women and girls, and promotes cooperation with health, educational, social, cultural, and sports institutions, as well as community and religious leaders and providers of support and protection services.
Caritas also supports awareness-raising and advocacy efforts, and works to identify and address harmful practices, helping build an environment that is more aware of girls’ and women’s rights and better equipped to respond to their needs.
How many decisions in a girl’s or woman’s life could have been different if she had been given access to knowledge, choice, and support at the right time? You can help create those opportunities through your time, expertise, or support.
